Digicore developed independently through artists like David Shawty, Yungster Jack, and the Bloodhounds collective (including kurtains, pitfall, kuru, and saturn), who synthesized influences from 100 gecs's vocal manipulation style and the cloud rap lineage of Drain Gang. The genre's popularity accelerated through early adopters like Dolly, blackwinterwells, midwxst, quinn, and ericdoa, while the accompanying "glitchcore" visual aesthetic on TikTok further amplified its reach and helped define its identity in online spaces.

While digicore shares the maximalist electronic sensibility of its contemporary hyperpop movement, the two remain distinct: digicore maintains stronger hip hop DNA in its production and vocal approach, whereas hyperpop leans deeper into EDM roots. The genre frequently overlaps with trap-adjacent styles like Plugg, PluggnB, Trap Metal, and Drill, and pairs its frenzied production with lyrics touching betrayal, mental health struggles, and personal doubt alongside traditional hip hop braggadocio. The scene is defined by DIY aesthetics (often featuring video game and internet culture references), large collectives like NOVAGANG and helix tears, and artists' tendency to release singles rather than full projects, with frequent deletion and material revisions reflecting the genre's intentionally disposable approach.
