Brown started in gospel in Toccoa, Georgia before joining Bobby Byrd's Famous Flames in the mid-1950s. Those early hits like "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me" established him as a dynamic live performer, with Live at the Apollo capturing that intensity on record. By the early 1960s, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)", and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" had made him a crossover star, but his peak influence came later.

The late 1960s marked a sharp turn when Brown stripped down his arrangements to emphasize interlocking rhythms rooted in African percussion. This Africanized approach became the blueprint for funk itself, formalized through the J.B.s with records like "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" and "The Payback". He balanced this sonic innovation with socially conscious material like the 1968 anthem "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud". Brown's chart dominance was staggering: 17 number-one R&B singles, plus more Hot 100 entries that missed the top spot than any other artist.

Brown recorded prolifically through the 1970s and beyond, shifting through disco, funk variations, and R&B trends until his death in 2006. His influence shaped everything from hip-hop sampling to modern R&B production.
