Steve Harris assembled Iron Maiden as part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement, establishing a lineup that stabilized with Bruce Dickinson on vocals, Nicko McBrain on drums, and guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers. The band's early run defined their sound: Iron Maiden in 1980 set the template, Killers in 1981 refined it, and The Number of the Beast in 1982 became a watershed moment in metal with its intricate arrangements and conceptual depth. That album has sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide and remains one of the most studied records in heavy metal history.

After a period of flux through the 1990s, the 1999 reunion of Dickinson and Smith reinvigorated the band's output. Their subsequent releases reached number one across more than 25 countries, including Brave New World, The Final Frontier, The Book of Souls, and Senjutsu. Harris's primary songwriting continues to drive the band's thematic approach, drawing on history, literature, mythology, war, and science fiction. The band's visual identity, anchored by Eddie the mascot across nearly every cover, has become inseparable from heavy metal imagery itself.

Iron Maiden's commercial reach stands at over 130 million albums sold globally with more than 600 certifications, making them one of the few metal acts with mainstream penetration across multiple decades. Their live reputation is equally substantial, having performed roughly 2,500 shows since formation.
