About Genesis
The classic Genesis lineup took shape gradually. Founding keyboardist Tony Banks and bassist Mike Rutherford remained constant, but the group cycled through singers and guitarists. Peter Gabriel's theatrical presence defined their early albums Trespass (1970), Nursery Cryme (1971), Foxtrot (1972), and Selling England by the Pound (1973), which reached number three in the UK. The concept double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974) represented the peak of their elaborate stage productions before Gabriel departed.
Phil Collins took over vocals and drums, and as a trio with Banks and Rutherford, the band found broader commercial appeal. A Trick of the Tail (1976) and Wind & Wuthering (1976) eased the transition, while Follow You Follow Me from ...And Then There Were Three... (1978) became their first major chart hit. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, albums like Duke (1980), Abacab (1981), Invisible Touch (1986), and We Can't Dance (1991) refined their pop sensibility. The band disbanded in 1998 after Ray Wilson's tenure, though Banks and Rutherford reunited with Collins for tours in 2007 and 2021.
