Fleet Foxes is a Seattle-based indie folk outfit that built their sound on intricate vocal harmonies and refined songwriting rooted in 1960s pop sensibilities. Robin Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset's friendship began at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, where they bonded over Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Both came from musical households—Skjelset's mother was devoted to Dylan and country music, while Pecknold's father played soul in a 1960s local group called The Fathoms. After Pecknold briefly played bass for Seattle's Dolour, the two formed what became Fleet Foxes in 2006, initially under the name The Pineapples before settling on a moniker Pecknold felt evoked English fox hunting traditions. Producer Phil Ek recognized Pecknold's talent immediately and helped document the band's early demo that year.
Fleet Foxes gained traction through Myspace during 2007, accumulating significant plays before securing a Sub Pop deal in early 2008. The band's second EP Sun Giant and their debut album Fleet Foxes arrived in 2008 to strong critical reception, praised for their vocal arrangements and lyrical precision. Pecknold's role as principal songwriter and frontman solidified the band's direction through 2011's Helplessness Blues. A hiatus from 2013 to 2016, during which Pecknold pursued his undergraduate degree, preceded their return with Crack-Up on Nonesuch Records in 2017, followed by Shore on Anti- in 2020.
