The classic lineup crystallized around 1979 when Simon Le Bon joined as lead vocalist, completing the core five with Roger Taylor on drums and Andy Taylor on guitar. Their debut single 'Planet Earth' arrived in February 1981, hitting #12 in the UK and establishing the template: vivid, hook-loaded production paired with visual ambition that would define their career. The self-titled debut album followed in June 1981, charting at #3 in the UK and spending 117 weeks in the Top 100, achieving platinum status by late 1982.

Rio, released in May 1982, became the album that legitimized their commercial and critical standing. Named for John Taylor's fascination with Brazil's sensuality and exotic atmosphere, the record reached #2 in the UK and #1 in Australia, eventually going double-platinum in the US. The album benefited from sustained MTV rotation and director Russell Mulcahy's elaborate video campaign, which even hospitalized guitarist Andy Taylor with a tropical virus during on-location filming. Tracks like 'Hungry Like the Wolf' and the title track became inescapable, and Rio still ranks among the most respected new wave albums of the era, placing #3 in BBC Radio 2's Top 100 Favourite Albums in 2013.

The band's commercial dominance extended beyond studio work: they secured a James Bond tie-in with 'A View To A Kill' in 1985, turning the title sequence contribution into a bestselling single. Over four decades, Duran Duran accumulated 30 UK Top 40 singles (14 in the Top 10) and 21 US Billboard Hot 100 entries, earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
