About Donna Summer
Born Donna Adrian Gaines in Boston, Summer entered music through the blues rock band Crow before relocating to Europe in 1968. Her pivotal move to Munich for the stage production of Hair connected her with producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, a partnership that shaped her sound across multiple continents. After releasing Lady of the Night for the European market in 1974, she pivoted to disco and signed with Casablanca Records in 1975, where Love to Love You Baby became her breakthrough single, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976.
Summer's first three Casablanca albums achieved gold certification in the United States, with her fourth, I Remember Yesterday (1977), delivering I Feel Love, a top-ten US hit and UK number-one that cemented her commercial dominance. She became the first female artist to record three number-one singles in a single calendar year in 1979, a feat accompanied by a streak of three consecutive number-one albums beginning with the live album Live and More in 1978, followed by Bad Girls (1979) and On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II (1980). Her catalog from this period also includes standout singles like Last Dance, MacArthur Park, Hot Stuff, and a duet with Barbra Streisand, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough).
After leaving Casablanca Records in 1980, Summer recorded The Wanderer with Geffen, exploring rock and new wave territories, though these releases found less commercial traction. She returned to the charts in 1983 with She Works Hard for the Money on Mercury Records, and scored her final top-ten US hit in 1989 with This Time I Know It's for Real before her last Billboard Hot 100 appearance in 1999. Summer continued recording until her death in 2012, receiving posthumous recognition including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2013 and Songwriters Hall of Fame induction in 2025.
