Dave Brubeck was a pianist whose harmonic sophistication and willingness to work outside conventional time signatures made him one of jazz's most accessible figures. His quartet, anchored by saxophonist Paul Desmond, produced some of the best-selling jazz records ever made.
About Dave Brubeck
Brubeck was born in Concord, California in 1920 and grew up with classical piano training from his mother, but he developed his voice through jazz improvisation rather than formal study. His playing ranged from refined to bombastic depending on the context, and he became known for incorporating unusual time signatures into his compositions. Beyond "Take Five", the Paul Desmond composition that defined much of his public profile, Brubeck wrote jazz standards like "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke" that remain in circulation among working musicians.
His crossover into mainstream audiences set him apart from many of his contemporaries. Brubeck received recognition late in life with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, an NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship in 1999, and a Kennedy Center Honor in 2009. He died in December 2012, just one day before turning 92.
