The band met at University College London and began as Starfish before signing to Parlophone in 1999. Their debut Parachutes (2000) delivered the breakthrough single "Yellow" and won the Brit Award for British Album of the Year, a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, and a Mercury Prize nomination. A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002) matched that success with "Clocks", which earned a Grammy for Record of the Year. The early trilogy completed with X&Y (2005), a production-heavy effort that topped charts in over 30 countries.

Viva la Vita or Death and All His Friends (2008) marked their commercial peak, winning Grammy for Best Rock Album and earning their first Album of the Year nomination. The title track became the first British group song to hit number-one in both the UK and US simultaneously in the 21st century. Since then, Coldplay shifted their approach with Mylo Xyloto (2011), Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), Everyday Life (2019), and Music of the Spheres (2021), each bringing new textures including ambient production, R&B, funk, classical, and jazz fusion elements to their core sound.

The band earned distinction as the sixth-most awarded group in history and are considered influential to the modern alternative scene. Their live shows earned a reputation for intensity, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognized A Rush of Blood to the Head on their "200 Definitive Albums" list, while "Yellow" was included in their "Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" exhibition.
