Born in Yale, Oklahoma, in 1929, Baker grew up in a musical household where his father played Western swing guitar and his mother was a pianist. He began in church choir, moved through trombone to trumpet by age 13, and spent time in the U.S. Army bands in Berlin and San Francisco before his 1951 discharge. His education included studies at El Camino College and alongside peers like Vido Musso and Stan Getz, setting the stage for his most productive years.

Baker's breakthrough came with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet in 1952, where he refined a counterpoint-based approach that became his trademark. His 1954 Pacific Jazz recording Chet Baker Sings marked a peak: sophisticated interplay between vocals and trumpet that influenced cool jazz across multiple formats. Through the mid-1950s he released prolifically, including sessions with Art Pepper, Bill Evans, and Paul Chambers, while touring Europe and establishing international standing. My Funny Valentine became his signature piece during this period.

Addiction and legal troubles complicated his trajectory from the late 1950s onward. A 1966 incident damaged his teeth and embouchure, weakening his technical capacity, though he mounted a comeback in the 1970s with albums like She Was Too Good to Me and later recordings at venues such as Ronnie Scott's in London. His final decades saw continued activity in Europe and Japan, including a 1983 solo appearance on Elvis Costello's Shipbuilding. Baker died in Amsterdam in 1988 after falling from a hotel window.
