About Cannibal Corpse
The band formed in December 1988 from members of defunct local groups Beyond Death and Tirant Sin. They recorded a five-song demo called A Skull Full of Maggots and played their first show in March 1989 at the River Rock Cafe in Buffalo. After signing to Metal Blade Records in July 1989, they released Eaten Back to Life in August 1990, then relocated to Tampa to tap into Florida's death metal activity. Butchered at Birth arrived in July 1991, establishing the band's brutal approach and triggering European and North American tours.
The early years saw significant lineup shifts. Founding guitarist Bob Rusay left in February 1993 due to differences in musical direction and was replaced by Rob Barrett. Original vocalist Chris Barnes was dismissed during the recording of Vile in 1996 and replaced by George Fisher from Monstrosity. These changes coincided with continued studio output and intense touring schedules. In 1994 the band appeared in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective performing an abridged version of Hammer Smashed Face. Pat O'Brien replaced Barrett in 1997 but was arrested in 2018, leading Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal to join as his replacement.
Cannibal Corpse released sixteen studio albums between 1990 and 2023, touring constantly with acts ranging from Slayer to Amon Amarth. Their fifteenth album Violence Unimagined achieved their first Billboard Top 10 placement in 2021, debuting at number six with 14,000 copies sold. The current lineup includes original members Paul Mazurkiewicz on drums and Alex Webster on bass. The Groove Hunter tracks 7 editions across the Cannibal Corpse catalog, including Violence Unimagined, Tomb Of The Mutilated, Torture, Butchered At Birth, Vile, Bleeding, and Wretched Spawn, with multiple picture disc and reissue variations available for collectors.
