Marley's early work came through producer Lee Scratch Perry, who captured the raw energy of The Wailers' sound on some of reggae's earliest commercial recordings. When The Wailers disbanded in 1974, Marley's solo trajectory accelerated. The 1977 album Exodus anchored his international reputation and remains one of the most essential reggae records ever pressed, earning Time Magazine's Album of the Century designation in 1999.
Marley's cultural impact extended beyond music into his visible embrace of Rastafarian practice and philosophy. His adoption of dreadlocks and use of marijuana as a sacrament became inseparable from his public persona, while songs like No Woman, No Cry, Redemption Song, and One Love carried messages of social struggle and spiritual unity that resonated across racial and geographical boundaries. He received the UN's Peace Medal of the Third World in 1978 and was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
Marley died of cancer on May 11, 1981, but his influence endured through Legend (1984), which became the best-selling reggae album ever with over 12 million copies sold.
