Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman in Minnesota and moved to New York in 1961 to establish himself as a folk musician. His early albums drew from traditional folk and blues, but The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963) introduced his gift for literary songwriting, with pieces like "Girl from the North Country" and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" that addressed civil rights and social conflict. Songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became movement anthems, though Dylan's refusal to be confined to any single mode defined his entire trajectory.
The electric turn of 1965 and 1966 proved decisive. Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde integrated rock instrumentation alongside his evolving lyrics, while "Like a Rolling Stone" expanded the possibilities of what commercial pop could express.
