The band took shape around Harry and Stein, with their name derived from the casual street greeting Harry received after bleaching her hair. Early releases like the 1976 self-titled debut and 1977's Plastic Letters established them in the underground, but Parallel Lines in 1978 transformed their trajectory. The album's lead single "Heart of Glass" became a number one hit despite (or because of) its disco production, heavy on Phil Spector's wall of sound influence. This shift troubled some punk-aligned listeners, yet it proved the band's range and ambition.

Blondie's commercial peak came through disciplined singles work: "Call Me" topped charts in 1980 as the American Gigolo theme, while Autoamerican delivered back-to-back number ones with "The Tide Is High" and "Rapture." By 1982, internal tension, Chris Stein's health crisis, and declining sales led to a split. The band reunited in 1997 with Harry, Stein, Destri, and Burke anchoring the lineup, releasing No Exit in 1998 and scoring another number one with "Maria." Subsequent albums The Curse of Blondie (2003) and later work maintained their presence in electronic and dance contexts.
