Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb formed their first group, the Rattlesnakes, in Manchester as teenagers before the family relocated to Australia in the late 1950s. There they found early chart success as the Bee Gees, then returned to the UK in 1967 under producer Robert Stigwood's direction. Their catalog built steadily through the late 1960s and early 1970s with albums like Horizontal, Idea, and Odessa, showcasing their gift for intricate three-part harmonies with Robin's vibrato lead vocals carrying much of the early material.
The mid-to-late 1970s marked their commercial peak. Main Course arrived in 1975 with a sharper R&B edge, and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack two years later became a cultural phenomenon that won five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. Barry's falsetto falsetto became the group's signature sound during this stretch, dominating hits across Children of the World, Spirits Having Flown, and into the 1980s. They wrote and produced extensively for other artists while maintaining their own release schedule through Living Eyes, E.S.P., One, and beyond.
The trio's impact endured despite personnel changes and eventual retirement. Maurice passed in 2003, and after Robin's death in 2012, the active Bee Gees chapter closed. Their sales figures rank among the all-time greats at 120 to 250 million records sold worldwide, with nine number-one Billboard hits and 1997 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
