Alice in Chains emerged from Seattle in 1987 as a heavy metal band that rode the grunge wave without abandoning their metal roots. Known for the harmonized vocals between Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell, the band built a catalog of albums that defined 1990s rock radio.
About Alice in Chains
The band's original lineup of Cantrell, Sean Kinney, Staley, and Mike Starr achieved mainstream breakthrough with 1990's Facelift and the single Man in the Box. They solidified their commercial dominance with Dirt in 1992, which spawned Rooster and Would?, establishing Alice in Chains as one of the decade's most successful rock acts. After Starr's replacement by Mike Inez in early 1993, the band continued with Jar of Flies in 1994 and the self-titled Alice in Chains in 1995, both reaching number one on the US Billboard 200.
Substance abuse complications led to a prolonged hiatus beginning in 1996. Layne Staley's death in 2002 marked the end of an era, but the band reunited in 2005 with William DuVall joining as co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist in 2006. Since the reunion, Alice in Chains released Black Gives Way to Blue in 2009, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here in 2013, and Rainier Fog in 2018, continuing to tour and record with renewed energy.
In the US market, Alice in Chains has sold over 30 million RIAA-certified records and charted 18 Top 10 hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks, including five number-one songs. The Groove Hunter tracks 5 editions across the band's catalog, including pressings of Facelift, Dirt, Alice In Chains, and specialty releases like the limited picture disc edition of Greatest Hits Live 1990-1992, along with the classic three-record collection pairing Facelift, Dirt, and Jar of Flies.
