Formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, ABBA quickly established themselves as a force in pop music. Their 1974 Eurovision victory launched them to international prominence, and they maintained eight consecutive number-one albums in the UK while becoming the first group from a non-English-speaking country to achieve consistent chart success across English-speaking markets. The band's composition as two married couples shaped their sound until personal strains led to darker, more introspective material in their later period before disbanding in January 1983.

After the band's split, their catalog experienced a major revival when Polygram acquired ABBA's records and Polar company in 1989. The 1992 release of Gold: Greatest Hits became a worldwide bestseller, and subsequent film appearances in Muriel's Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert reignited collector and casual listener interest alike. The 1999 musical adaptation Mamma Mia! further cemented the group's place in popular culture, spawning successful film versions in 2008 and 2018. The band also recorded two new tracks in 2018 after 35 years of inactivity.
