About the Wonky genre
Wonky developed from two converging paths in the late 2000s. Hip hop producers influenced by J Dilla and Madlib, particularly Flying Lotus and Dabrye, began incorporating dubstep and IDM elements into their work. Simultaneously, dubstep producers on labels like Hyperdub and those tied to the purple sound movement started layering hip hop influences into their productions. By 2009, these strands merged into a distinct genre defined by unquantized, offbeat rhythms at dubstep tempos paired with disorienting mid-range frequencies.
Glasgow became one of wonky's primary hubs, anchored by the LuckyMe collective and the Numbers club and label. Producers like Hudson Mohawke and Rustie emerged from this scene and shaped the genre's trajectory. In North America, Flying Lotus and Starkey became central figures, with Starkey coining the term street bass as the American parallel. The Scandinavian skweee movement developed similar sonic characteristics but from separate creative roots, showing how the period's electronic and hip hop cross-pollination occurred across multiple regions and production communities.
