About the Slowcore genre

Slowcore emerged from the late-1980s indie rock scene as artists began mining the acoustic starkness of Nick Drake's Pink Moon and the cold, quiet approach of The Velvet Underground's self-titled third album. American Music Club and Galaxie 500 established the template, but it was Codeine who distilled slowcore to its purest form with skeletal, glacial arrangements that became the genre's reference point. From there, the sound branched into two directions: the heavier, more abrasive strain influenced by Galaxie 500, and the folk-leaning approach descended from American Music Club's lineage.

The American slowcore scene produced Carissa's Wierd, Idaho, Red House Painters, and others who expanded the palette by incorporating folk, country, psychedelia, and post-rock elements. Meanwhile, groups like Japan's Sugar Plant and Korea's 잠 carried the sound internationally. By the late 1990s, slowcore had largely faded from mainstream attention, but the 2020s brought renewed interest as artists like Duster and sign crushes motorist found audiences on social media platforms, introducing a new generation to the genre's patient, detail-oriented approach to composition.
