Russia's classical heritage runs deep. Composers like Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Glinka, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich developed distinctive approaches to symphonic form, ballet, and opera that influenced twentieth-century music worldwide. Their scores appeared on numerous pressings across Soviet labels and Western reissues, making classical Russian vinyl a sprawling collecting territory with significant variation in sound quality and edition rarity.

Russian rock emerged in the 1970s as a parallel underground to Western rock, with bands like Mashina Vremeni, Aquarium, Avtograf, Kino, and Alisa building devoted audiences despite state restrictions on distribution and performance. These acts developed their own aesthetic separate from both Western rock and Soviet pop, creating a recorded legacy that spans official Soviet releases, bootlegs, and later reissues that can be difficult to track across different pressing plants and territories. Collectors often pursue both eras depending on their focus: classical orchestral works, Soviet-era rock pressings, or post-1990s reissues that brought previously unavailable material back into circulation.
