About the Reggaeton genre

The roots of reggaeton trace back to Panama, where Spanish-language reggae first appeared as a regional variation of Jamaican dancehall. The style migrated to Puerto Rico, where it underwent a transformation that separated it from both its dancehall parent and Latino hip hop variants. What emerged was a genre with its own specific beat architecture and production approach, distinct from the hip hop recordings made by Latino artists.

The genre's rhythmic foundation, called Dem Bow, takes its name from a Shabba Ranks dancehall track that helped popularize the beat in the early 1990s. Reggaeton's sonic palette reflects its Caribbean and Latin American context, pulling elements from multiple traditions simultaneously: the percussive polyrhythms of bomba and plena, the brass and arrangement sensibilities of salsa and merengue, the synth-based production of electronic music, and the vocal delivery and attitude of hip hop and R&B sung in Spanish. This layering of influences created something that resonated first with Latin American youth and then, after mainstream breakthrough around 2004, with listeners across North America, Europe, and Asia. Puerto Rico became most closely associated with the genre's development and commercial success, producing the majority of its prominent artists and serving as the cultural center for reggaeton's continued evolution.
