About the Rage genre

The genre developed from production ideas established by Pi'erre Bourne, whose work with Playboi Carti created a template for unorthodox, repetitive arrangements that felt deliberately jagged and raw. This foundation was crystallized through F1LTHY's production on Whole Lotta Red, where dissonant synth work and Carti's vocal delivery formed the sonic blueprint for what would become rage.

Trippie Redd's snippet 'Miss the Rage' pushed the sound into wider circulation around 2019 and 2020, partly because the production technique was simple and replicable: reversed Future Bass loops layered over basic trap programming. The track spawned countless YouTube beat tapes labeled 'Rage Beats' and 'Rage Type Beat', cementing the genre's name and attracting producers from the SoundCloud ecosystem. Plugg, Digicore, and Cloud Rap artists brought their own textures and aesthetics to the sound, reinforcing rage's connection to underground production culture and its deliberate rejection of polished, conventional hip hop structure.
