About the Gospel genre

Gospel emerged from two separate traditions in American churches, with African-American churches developing their form in the early 19th century while white Southern gospel drew from European roots. The sharp division between black and white America kept these traditions distinct, though some artists crossed over. Performers like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Golden Gate Quartet, and Clara Ward brought gospel into secular venues including nightclubs, while others such as Mahalia Jackson remained in religious contexts exclusively. Some artists including Al Green and Solomon Burke moved freely between gospel and secular music throughout their careers.

Musically, gospel is defined by strong vocal performances often featuring complex harmonies, religious lyrics referencing Jesus Christ or Christian worship, and a more syncopated rhythm compared to hymns. Arrangements typically feature pianos, Hammond organs, drums, bass guitar, and increasingly electric guitar, with many recordings built around choir formations. The genre branches into contemporary gospel, urban contemporary gospel (also called Black Gospel), Southern gospel, and praise and worship music, each with its own character and regional following.

What began as an American form has spread globally, with established gospel traditions in Australia, Norway, and Canada. The music remains defined by its purpose: expressing personal and communal Christian belief while serving as an alternative to mainstream secular music, whether performed for aesthetic pleasure, ceremonial purposes, or as entertainment.
