About the Glam Metal genre

The genre emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip, fusing the visual theatricality of glam rock acts like David Bowie, T. Rex, and New York Dolls with the heavier instrumental approach of Alice Cooper and Kiss. Mötley Crüe, Hanoi Rocks, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Bon Jovi, and Dokken established the template early on: upbeat rock anthems and slow power ballads wrapped in flashy production and an image that prioritized spectacle.

The genre's commercial peak ran from roughly 1982 to 1991, when bands like Poison, Skid Row, Cinderella, and Warrant achieved mainstream saturation and dominated MTV rotation. The early 1990s brought a sharp reversal as grunge and alternative rock gained cultural momentum, their deliberately stripped-down aesthetic and image pushing back directly against glam metal's elaborate presentation. Many marquee acts of the 1980s either disbanded or watched their relevance crater during this shift.

Since the late 1990s, glam metal has cycled back into favor, driven by reunion tours from 1980s veterans and new acts drawing on the template. European bands including the Darkness, Crashdïet, and Reckless Love, alongside American groups like Steel Panther and Black Veil Brides, have kept the lineage alive and extended it into contemporary contexts.
