Drum and bass (DnB) is a high-energy electronic genre built on fast breakbeats, heavy basslines, and intricate layering. Emerging from UK rave culture in the early 1990s, it became a collector's staple with countless vinyl releases spanning jungle, liquid funk, and neurofunk subgenres.
About the Dnb genre
Drum and bass developed from the breakbeat-heavy sound of early rave and jungle records. Producers accelerated breakbeats to 160+ BPM and stripped away some of the pitched samples and melody-driven elements that defined jungle, creating a harder, more focused sound. The genre's emphasis on syncopated drums and deep sub-bass made it ideal for both dancefloor intensity and focused listening, and vinyl collectors have always valued the technical production and sound design that separates quality releases from filler.
The scene fragmented into several distinct branches. Liquid funk incorporated jazzy chords, soulful samples, and atmospheric pads over those fast breaks. Neurofunk brought industrial sounds, sci-fi atmospherics, and cinematic textures. Jump-up took a more playful, sample-heavy approach. This variety means collectors can chase specific labels and producers without exhausting the genre itself. Early Metalheadz, Reinforced, and Moving Shadow releases remain highly sought, while contemporary labels continue pressing new material on vinyl.
