About the Classic Country genre

The first commercial country recordings appeared in the early 1920s, starting with A.C. Robertson's fiddlin' tune "Sallie Gooden" for Victor in 1922 and Vernon Dalhart's nationwide hit "Wreck of the Old '97" in 1924. Columbia Records began issuing hillbilly music as early as 1924, while artists like Fiddlin' John Carson, Riley Puckett, Charlie Poole, and the North Carolina Ramblers built the genre's catalog. The steel guitar became a country staple when Jimmie Tarlton met Hawaiian guitarist Frank Ferera in 1922, introducing an instrument that would shape the sound for generations.

The historic Bristol sessions of August 1, 1927 marked country music's turning point, with talent scout Ralph Peer recording Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family. Rodgers fused hillbilly, gospel, jazz, blues, and folk into his own compositions, with "Blue Yodel" becoming a million-seller that established him as country's premier early voice. The Carter Family recorded roughly 300 songs over 17 years starting in 1927, preserving southeastern folklore and traditional ballads that became the genre's backbone.

During the Great Depression, country music's relatable lyrics about hardship resonated with both agricultural workers and industrial factory workers, particularly in the Carolina Piedmont textile boom. Radio barn dance shows proliferated across the country, with the Grand Ole Opry from WSM Nashville becoming the most influential, featuring stars like Uncle Dave Macon, Roy Acuff, and DeFord Bailey. This period cemented country as the working class's musical voice, a role it has maintained throughout its history.
