Chiptune

Chiptune is electronic music built entirely from the sound chips of vintage gaming hardware and computers, where composers worked within strict technical limits to create inventive melodies and rhythms. The genre encompasses everything from faithful recreations of 8-bit and 16-bit console sounds to modern software emulations, making it a collector's intersection of retro gaming nostalgia and serious electronic production.
About the Chiptune genre
The foundation of chiptune lies in hardware constraints that became creative advantages. A chip like the NES could generate only five distinct channels of sound, forcing composers to develop workarounds for harmonic limitations. Fast arpeggios became the standard technique for mimicking chords when simultaneous note playback wasn't possible, and these economical approaches defined the sonic character we now recognize as chiptune. Different chips from different eras each had their own voice: pulse waves, triangle waves, noise channels, and PCM playback each contributed unique timbral qualities.
What makes chiptune flexible as a genre is that it describes a production method and tonal palette rather than a fixed musical style. Any song can be reinterpreted in chiptune form depending on which hardware or emulator a composer chooses, which is why you'll find chiptune versions of rock, hip-hop, ambient, and experimental music. This has spawned numerous subgenres including chipbreak, chipstep, bitpop, chipwave, bitcore, chiphop, and countless experimental variations. Collectors pursuing chiptune releases will encounter both nostalgic game soundtracks and contemporary artists using vintage sound chips and emulation software as their primary instruments.
