Black metal's lineage traces through Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Mercyful Fate, but the genre solidified during the Norwegian second wave of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Burzum, Darkthrone, Mayhem, and Immortal established the template that most modern black metal still follows, while American acts like Profanatica and VON carved their own path. The scene gained mainstream attention following high-profile incidents involving Norwegian musicians, cementing black metal's association with transgression and intensity.

Modern black metal rarely adheres to conventional song structures, instead building extended passages from repetitive riffs and atmospheric layering. Emperor pioneered symphonic black metal with prominent keyboards, a direction later adopted by bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, who blended gothic sensibilities into the framework. Others such as Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega explore unorthodox territory, while Ulver and Nokturnal Mortum incorporated neofolk and ethnic instrumentation. The genre remains split between lo-fi rawness and professional production, between shrieked extremity and clean vocal passages, allowing collectors to find everything from primitive bedroom recordings to lush orchestral arrangements.
