Emerging from Nigeria in the early 2000s, Afrobeats takes its name from Afrobeat but operates in different territory. Where Afrobeat was Fela Kuti and the 1970s fusion of jazz with traditional Nigerian and Ghanaian music, Afrobeats incorporates contemporary global influences while maintaining strong local identity. The sound pulls from hip-hop production, reggae and dancehall riddims, and R&B sensibilities, creating something that feels both deeply rooted and immediately modern.
The signature element of Afrobeats is its drum work. Whether electronic or live instrumentation, the rhythm carries equal or sometimes greater weight than vocals or melody. These beats reference traditional West African drumming practices while pushing into contemporary production techniques. Vocalists deliver content in West African-accented English layered with pidgin, local Nigerian or Ghanaian languages, and regional slang. This linguistic approach reflects the music's geographic specificity and cultural authenticity, refusing to sand down local character for international consumption.
