The band started at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in 1997 with an ambitious six-piece lineup, though their first release Midget Tossing gained minimal traction. When Ryan Key replaced the original vocalist and convinced the group to relocate to Southern California, their trajectory shifted. The 2001 debut One for the Kids on Lobster Records and 2002's The Underdog EP laid groundwork, but their 2003 Capitol Records signing marked the turning point. Ocean Avenue became their most successful album, propelled partly by the track Breathing appearing in Burnout 3: Takedown. Sean Mackin's violin remained their sonic signature throughout their catalog.

Following Ocean Avenue, Yellowcard navigated several lineup changes while maintaining output. Lights and Sounds arrived in January 2006 with the Natalie Maines collaboration How I Go, then Paper Walls in 2007 debuted at number 13 on the Billboard 200. After a two-year hiatus, they reformed in 2010 and released When You're Through With Thinking, Say Yes, followed by Southern Air in 2012, which reached number 10 on the Billboard 200. Lift a Sail in 2014 marked a notable shift away from their pop-punk foundation. Their self-titled final album arrived September 30, 2016, preceding the band's dissolution after a final tour concluding March 25, 2017, leaving Sean Mackin as the sole original member.
