Wilco formed when Uncle Tupelo fractured in 1994, with Tweedy retaining most of the original lineup (bassist John Stirratt and drummer Ken Coomer) while co-founder Jay Farrar exited to form Son Volt. The band took its name from the CB radio phrase for compliance and began recording A.M. at Easley studio in mid-1995, a debut that leaned heavily on the alternative country template they'd inherited. Though stylistically similar to Uncle Tupelo, A.M. underperformed commercially and critically, ranking well below Son Volt's debut in both charts and reception. The addition of keyboardist and guitarist Jay Bennett shortly after provided the instrumental depth that would shape their evolution.
During the extended tour for A.M., Tweedy wrote material that deliberately moved away from alt-country conventions, seeking to escape the devoted No Depression audience that had embraced Uncle Tupelo. This shift accelerated across subsequent releases, but the band's fourth album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot became the flashpoint for their artistic ambitions. After Reprise Records rejected the finished album and dropped the band, a label dispute ensued that illustrated early 2000s music-industry dysfunction. Wilco ultimately secured the master recordings and released Yankee Hotel Foxtrot through Nonesuch in 2002, a move that vindicated their artistic direction: the album became their commercial peak with over 590,000 copies sold. Their fifth studio album A Ghost Is Born (2004) earned two Grammy Awards including Best Alternative Music Album, cementing their position as a major force in American indie rock. By 2011, Wilco established their own label dBpm for the release of The Whole Love, consolidating full control over their catalog and future releases.
