Houston signed to Arista Records at 19 and released her debut album in 1985, which spent 14 weeks at number one and stands as the best-selling debut by a solo artist. Her 1987 follow-up Whitney topped the Billboard 200 for 11 weeks, making her the first woman to debut at number one on both US and UK charts. By 1990, with I'm Your Baby Tonight, she shifted toward a more urban contemporary sound, cementing her range across multiple genres.
Her acting career launched with The Bodyguard in 1992, whose soundtrack became the best-selling soundtrack album of all time and won Grammy Album of the Year.
