Whirr is a San Francisco shoegaze band formed in 2010 that channels the dense, effects-laden textures of My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Built around guitarist Nick Bassett and vocalist Loren Rivera, the band has navigated significant lineup changes while maintaining their signature wall-of-sound approach across multiple labels and self-releases.
About Whirr
The band initially formed as a nameless project before drummer Sergio Miranda suggested the name Whirr as homage to shoegaze acts like Lush, Ride, and Moose. They were forced to legally change from their original name Whirl after a woman performing acoustic Black Sabbath covers trademarked it. After a self-released demo cassette and the Distressor EP, Whirr signed to Tee Pee Records in 2011 and released their debut album Pipe Dreams in 2012. The early years saw significant vocal transitions, with original singer Byanca Munoz replaced by Alexandra Morte, who was herself replaced by Kristina Esfandiari before the band eventually settled on Loren Rivera as sole vocalist.
Whirr's catalog expanded through multiple pressings and reissues, including Graveface Records' remastered Pipe Dreams Redux in 2014 and the Whirr/Nothing split on Run for Cover Records that same year. Founding guitarist Nick Bassett also joined Nothing as bassist, while also collaborating with former Whirr vocalist Alexandra Morte in the alternative pop project Camera Shy. After a three-year silence, the band returned in 2019 with the surprise vinyl release Feels Like You, followed by the single Muta / Blue Sugar in 2023 and the album Raw Blue in late 2024.
The Groove Hunter currently tracks 7 editions of Whirr releases, including pressings of Distressor, Feels Like You, Sway, Raw Blue, and Pipe Dreams Redux, with variants like the Distressor Bone & Black Splatter Hand Numbered/500 among the catalog.
