About Weezer
The band formed quickly around Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, and Matt Sharp, signing to Geffen Records just five weeks after their first gig in 1993. Their self-titled debut, commonly called The Blue Album, landed in May 1994 with tremendous critical acclaim. Produced by The Cars frontman Ric Ocasek, the album featured three major singles: "Undone - The Sweater Song," "Buddy Holly," and "Say It Ain't So." Director Spike Jonze's music videos, particularly for "Buddy Holly," drove the band into mainstream visibility through MTV rotation and multiple award wins. The Blue Album achieved three-times platinum certification and remains one of the most popular rock albums of the early 1990s, with a 2004 Deluxe Edition reissue that added a second disc of B-sides and unreleased material.
Weezer's sophomore effort took a different path. Rivers Cuomo initially conceived a space-themed rock opera titled "Songs from the Black Hole" in late 1994, but the concept was ultimately abandoned. What emerged instead was Pinkerton, released September 24, 1996, which took a darker and more abrasive approach than its predecessor. The album peaked at number 19 on the U.S. charts and initially faced harsh critical reception, earning criticism in a Rolling Stone reader poll. However, Pinkerton gradually transformed into a cult classic and is regarded by many collectors as Weezer's finest work; Rolling Stone itself later revised its assessment to a five-star rating. The band continued releasing material through the 2000s and beyond, with their catalog evolving considerably from those early alternative rock foundations.
The Groove Hunter currently tracks 7 editions across Weezer's discography, including Weezer Blue Album, Pinkerton, Weezer Green Album, Make Believe, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, and variant pressings like the Amazon Exclusive Hot Pink Vinyl and Exclusive Limited Edition Blue & White Marble Colored Vinyl LP.
