Vincent Anthony Guaraldi was born in San Francisco in 1928 and remained rooted in the city throughout his life, becoming a fixture of west coast jazz. His early trio work, starting in 1953 with Cal Tjader and forming his own group by 1955, leaned toward morose, classically-influenced arrangements without drums. The 1959 film Black Orpheus shifted his direction; his trio's instrumental version of "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" became a #22 Billboard Hot 100 hit and an award winner, opening doors to film and television work.

Guaraldi's Peanuts connection began with "Linus and Lucy," which he played over the phone to producer Lee Mendelson and later became perhaps the most recognizable instrumental piece in popular music, despite widespread misconception that it was the Peanuts Theme itself. The 1965 special A Charlie Brown Christmas cemented his legacy, pairing Guaraldi originals like "Christmas Time Is Here" with holiday standards in his laid-back acoustic jazz style. The album never left print and became a yearly bestseller for decades. As the 1960s progressed, Guaraldi embraced synthesizers and the Fender Rhodes electric piano, devices that colored his later Peanuts scores while he continued playing live gigs mixing jazz standards, pop covers, and his Peanuts catalog.

Guaraldi died unexpectedly in February 1976 between sets at a Menlo Park nightclub, having completed his underscore for It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown that same day. Jazz critics of his era overlooked his melodically-minded approach in favor of experimental forms centered in New York, but his influence has only deepened; many musicians and listeners trace their jazz appreciation directly to Peanuts specials watched in childhood.
