The classic Van Halen lineup of Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and Michael Anthony dominated rock radio from 1978 through 1985. Their self-titled debut moved over 10 million copies domestically and established the template for arena rock success. The run continued with Van Halen II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down, and 1984, each reaching multi-platinum status. The 1984 album alone sold 10 million U.S. copies and spawned Jump, the only Van Halen single to hit number one on the Hot 100.
When Roth departed in 1985, Sammy Hagar's arrival marked a stylistic shift toward a more radio-friendly sound. Van Halen released four consecutive number-one, multi-platinum albums with Hagar: 5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance, alongside the double-platinum live recording Live: Right Here, Right Now. Hagar's exit in 1996 and brief Gary Cherone tenure gave way to reunions with Hagar in 2004 and Roth in 2006. The 2012 album A Different Kind of Truth with Roth and Eddie's son Wolfgang on bass became the band's final studio release before Eddie's death in October 2020. Van Halen sold over 56 million albums in the U.S. and 80 million worldwide, with 13 number-one hits on the Mainstream Rock chart.
