Type O Negative brought gothic metal and doom into the 1990s mainstream as Brooklyn's darkest export, mixing the melodic sensibility of classic rock with crushing downtuned riffs and Peter Steele's cavernous bass-range vocals. Their dry, morbid humor and willingness to write deliberately bleak material set them apart from the earnest metal bands of their era.
About Type o Negative
Formed in 1990 from the remnants of Steele's previous band Carnivore, Type O Negative built their sound on two pillars: the chord-driven heaviness of Black Sabbath and the compositional sophistication of the Beatles. Keyboardist Josh Silver's atmospheric production, influenced by Pink Floyd, gave their records a cinematic quality that separated them from typical metal fare. The band's early singles like Black No. 1 and Christian Woman from the 1993 album Bloody Kisses became their breakthrough, with that record becoming the first in Roadrunner Records' catalog to achieve both gold and platinum certification. Their catalog spanned from the raw early work of Slow, Deep and Hard through the carefully crafted October Rust and continued until Dead Again in 2007, establishing them as a fixture in touring lineups alongside Pantera and Life of Agony, plus regular Ozzfest appearances.
Type O Negative maintained a consistent lineup for most of their existence, with Steele handling vocals and bass alongside his role as primary songwriter, Silver on keyboards, Kenny Hickey on guitar and backing vocals, and drummer Johnny Kelly joining in 1994 to replace Sal Abruscato. The band's catalog extended beyond studio albums to VHS and DVD documentaries, soundtrack contributions, and compilation appearances. Peter Steele's death in April 2010 from sepsis ended the band's active existence.
