About Tyler Bates

Bates built his approach to composition from constraint. As a teenager, he daisy-chained cassette recorders and manipulated tape speeds on an Echoplex to explore texture and rhythm within the limits of home studio gear. This hands-on experimentation with analog tools shaped his sensibility for atmospheric production and unconventional effects processing that would define his later work.

He entered film scoring by accident in 1993, accepting a low-budget film job in Los Angeles with no professional experience. Before that pivot, Bates had managed a Chicago trading firm while playing in Pet, a band with songwriter Lisa Papineau that drew attention from Tori Amos, who campaigned for their Atlantic Records deal and started the Igloo imprint to support them. The band recorded their debut in Ireland in 1996 and achieved a platinum credit for the song Lil' Boots on The Crow: City Of Angels soundtrack, touring with Blink 182, Limp Bizkit, and others. By late 1997, Bates left the group to focus entirely on scoring.

His breakthrough came through director Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, which established Bates' voice for horror and action scoring. Rob Zombie and James Gunn soon recruited him for The Devil's Rejects and Slither, both now considered cult classics. His work on Snyder's 300 expanded into sweeping orchestral and choral arrangements, though that score drew criticism for borrowing material from Elliot Goldenthal, Goldenthal's Troy compositions, and other sources. Beyond film, Bates has composed for PlayStation titles including God of War: Ascension. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 7 editions across Bates' catalog, with prominent titles including Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe Edition and Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe Collection spanning multiple volumes and color variants.
