Turner first recorded as the lead vocalist of Ike & Tina Turner starting in the 1960s, building a reputation for intense live shows with the Ikettes and Kings of Rhythm. After separating from Ike Turner in the 1970s, she rebuilt her solo career from relative obscurity, eventually landing the 1983 single 'Let's Stay Together' which marked the beginning of her commercial resurgence.
Her breakthrough came with Private Dancer in 1984, a multi-platinum album that included 'What's Love Got to Do with It', her only US number-one single and a Grammy winner for Record of the Year. The decade that followed produced Break Every Rule and Foreign Affair, albums that established her as a stadium-level touring artist. Her Break Every Rule World Tour set a Guinness World Record for concert attendance at roughly 180,000 people and became the highest-grossing tour by a female artist in the 1980s. Wildest Dreams arrived in 1996, followed by Twenty Four Seven in 1999, before she retired from touring in 2009 after her 50th Anniversary Tour.
Turner also appeared in films including Tommy, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and Last Action Hero, while her autobiography I, Tina inspired both a biographical film and later a jukebox musical. She received 12 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: with Ike Turner in 1991 and as a solo artist in 2021.
