The Leto brothers launched Thirty Seconds to Mars as a family project in Los Angeles, eventually solidifying their lineup with guitarist Tomo Miličević in 2003. The album earned platinum certification from the RIAA and sold over four million copies globally. This Is War arrived in 2009 with a deliberate sonic shift toward electronic and experimental textures, incorporating vintage synth elements that Leto described as a departure from their earlier work.
