Thirty Seconds to Mars is an alternative rock trio founded in 1998 by Jared Leto and his brother Shannon, built on concept-driven songwriting and synth-layered arrangements. The band's catalog spans from their introspective 2002 debut through the platinum success of A Beautiful Lie and the electronic experimentation of This Is War.
About Thirty Seconds to Mars
The Leto brothers launched Thirty Seconds to Mars as a family project in Los Angeles, eventually solidifying their lineup with guitarist Tomo Miličević in 2003. Their self-titled 2002 debut presented themselves as concept artists, with Jared Leto crafting narratives around human struggle and self-determination. Though the record started slowly at number 107 on the Billboard 200, it found its audience and eventually moved two million copies worldwide, establishing the band's visual identity through distinct album logos including the phoenix 'Mithra' and later the Trinity skull imagery.
A Beautiful Lie in 2005 marked the band's commercial breakthrough, driven by the single "The Kill," which achieved a record for longest-running hit on the US Modern Rock chart with over 50 weeks of chart presence. The album earned platinum certification from the RIAA and sold over four million copies globally. The music video, directed by Jared Leto under the pseudonym Bartholomew Cubbins, received widespread recognition including MTV Video Music Award accolades.
This Is War arrived in 2009 with a deliberate sonic shift toward electronic and experimental textures, incorporating vintage synth elements that Leto described as a departure from their earlier work. The album peaked at number 18 on the Billboard 200. Leto's directorial work continued with the "Hurricane" music video, a 13-minute piece that drew controversy for its graphic content and faced bans from MTV and international broadcasters. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 7 editions of Thirty Seconds to Mars vinyl, including pressings of A Beautiful Lie, This Is War, and their self-titled debut, alongside special editions like the A Beautiful Lie 20 Year Anniversary Red and various limited translucent vinyl releases.
