Thin Lizzy was an Irish hard rock band that emerged from Dublin in 1969 with a sound rooted in blues, soul, and folk traditions. Led by bassist and vocalist Phil Lynott, the band became one of the most distinctive acts of the 1970s, achieving major commercial success across the UK and beyond.

Thin Lizzy formed in 1969 with Phil Lynott as the creative core, writing or co-writing nearly all of their material. The band's lineup shifted frequently, but the rhythm section of Lynott on bass and Brian Downey on drums remained constant. Early guitarist Eric Bell's departure in 1973 led to a succession of lead players, most notably Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, who formed the twin-guitar setup that defined their mid-to-late 70s sound. The band's membership spanning both sides of the Irish border and both Catholic and Protestant communities made them a rare cultural symbol during The Troubles.
Their hit singles arrived consistently throughout the decade: "Whiskey in the Jar" (1972) established them internationally, "The Boys Are Back in Town" (1976) became their signature track, and "Waiting for an Alibi" (1979) proved their staying power. Albums like Jailbreak, Bad Reputation, and Black Rose: A Rock Legend reached the UK top ten and showcased Lynott's songwriting depth, drawing influence from Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen alongside his own Irish literary sensibility. The Troubles context gave their music a unique weight that separated them from the era's braying metal pack.
Lynott's death in 1986 ended the original band, though Gorham and Downey kept versions of Thin Lizzy active before forming Black Star Riders in 2012 to pursue new material. The band has reunited for occasional concerts since. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 11 editions of Thin Lizzy releases, including Thin Lizzy 55th Anniversary Green, Thin Lizzy 55th Anniversary Super Deluxe, Jailbreak, and Bad Reputation among others.
