The band's story began in early 2012 when they appeared online anonymously with no photos, bios, or identifying information, only releasing atmospheric tracks like "Female Robbery" and "Sweater Weather." This deliberate obscurity generated significant press intrigue as listeners and critics tried to piece together who these musicians were. By spring 2012, Zane Lowe at BBC Radio One had revealed that Jesse Rutherford led the project, and the band released their self-titled EP "I'm Sorry" for free. Sweater Weather became their breakthrough, hitting number one on the U.S. Alternative Tracks chart and reaching number eight on the Rock Tracks chart.
Rutherford's vision centered on merging hip-hop production with indie rock instrumentation, creating what the band called their "black and white" sound. Working with producers Justyn Pilbrow and Emile Haynie, the band prioritized rhythm and vocal delivery, blending brooding instrumental layers with Rutherford's singing and rap-influenced phrasing. Their full-length debut "I Love You." arrived in April 2013, expanding the sonic territory they'd established on the EP. The group's approach emphasized discovery and mystery over conventional band narrative, believing the music itself should speak louder than biographical details.
The Neighbourhood's catalog has continued to evolve through multiple releases and reissues.
