Formed in London in 1962, The Kinks achieved immediate impact with their 1964 breakthrough single "You Really Got Me", whose distorted guitar riff created by Dave Davies became instantly recognizable. The band quickly followed with hits like "All Day and All of the Night" and "Tired of Waiting for You", establishing themselves as part of the British Invasion, though a 1965 American tour dispute led to a touring ban that lasted several years.

From the mid-1960s onward, Ray Davies shifted the band's focus toward observational songwriting rooted in English culture and everyday life. Albums like "Face to Face" (1966), "Something Else by the Kinks" (1967), and "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society" (1968) reflected this evolution, with singles such as "Sunny Afternoon", "Waterloo Sunset", and "Lola" showcasing his satirical wit and attention to detail. The band sustained momentum through the early 1970s with "Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)" and "Muswell Hillbillies", both capturing specific aspects of British life through distinctive arrangements. After a commercial decline in the mid-1970s, they resurfaced with "Sleepwalker" (1977) and later "State of Confusion" (1983), which brought them back to US chart prominence.

Ray and Dave Davies remained the band's core throughout their 35-year existence, though the rhythm section evolved considerably. Drummer Mick Avory played on most of their crucial recordings until 1984, while bassist Pete Quaife departed permanently in 1969 and was replaced by John Dalton. The Kinks formally disbanded in 1997 after their final performance in 1996. The original four members entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
