Formed in 1989 and signed to Island Records in 1991, The Cranberries released their debut Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? in 1993 to solid commercial success. The band's second album No Need to Argue (1994) catapulted them to international recognition, particularly through the single Zombie, which became their signature track and a protest anthem that endures to this day. Their run through the late 1990s yielded To the Faithful Departed (1996) and Bury the Hatchet (1999), establishing them among the best-selling alternative rock acts of the decade with global sales approaching 50 million.
After signing with MCA Records, the band released Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (2001), which received a mixed response and marked the beginning of tensions around the album's promotion. A six-year hiatus followed, broken in 2009 when they reunited for touring. The band returned to the studio with Roses (2012), their first new material in over a decade, followed by Something Else (2017), an acoustic and orchestral reinterpretation of their earlier catalog. Following O'Riordan's death in 2018, the remaining members completed their final album In the End (2019), released posthumously to critical acclaim.
The Cranberries have received numerous awards including an Ivor Novello Award, Juno Award, MTV Europe Music Award, and World Music Award, with Grammy and Brit Award nominations as well.
