The Black Keys are a two-piece alternative rock outfit from Akron, Ohio, formed in 2001 by Dan Auerbach on guitar and vocals and Patrick Carney on drums. Built on blues and psychedelic rock foundations, they've built a devoted collector following through their distinctive lo-fi aesthetic and prolific catalog of vinyl releases.

Auerbach and Carney released their debut The Big Come Up in 2002, followed by Thickfreakness in 2003 and Rubber Factory in 2004. Their trademark approach involved minimal production values and DIY studio work; most of Thickfreakness was tracked in roughly 14 hours in Carney's basement using only an early 1980s Tascam 388 8-track recorder, often leaving background noise intact. This sonic philosophy earned them critical praise from Rolling Stone on debut and a Time magazine mention as one of the 10 Best Acts of 2003.
The band supported major acts including Sleater-Kinney, Beck, and Radiohead while gaining attention from influential figures like John Peel and artists ranging from Robert Plant to Kirk Hammett. Their fourth album, Attack & Release, arrived in April 2008 as their first proper studio recording, produced by Danger Mouse. Brothers followed in spring 2010, marking a shift toward wider exposure through viral video success.
