The original lineup of Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine drew from 1950s rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and vocal group traditions to create what became known as the California sound. After signing with Capitol Records, they achieved sixteen consecutive top 40 singles in the US between 1962 and 1967, beginning with "Surfin' Safari". Brian Wilson steered the group's creative direction during these early years, handling songwriting, arranging, and production while the band's lyrics captured Southern California youth culture centered on surfing, cars, and romance.

Between Surfer Girl and The Beach Boys Today!, the band's sound shifted away from surf-oriented material toward orchestral arrangements and studio-focused production methods. The 1966 release of Pet Sounds and the single "Good Vibrations" marked the apex of Brian Wilson's production work and rank among the most influential recordings in popular music. This period coincided with the British Invasion, yet the Beach Boys maintained significant commercial success as one of the few major American rock acts of that era. The cancelled 1967 release of Smile and the launch of their own Brother Records label signaled internal shifts that would define the late 1960s and 1970s, when Carl Wilson took on principal musical direction and the group's domestic commercial performance declined despite their continued strength as live performers.

The band cycled through several record labels and lineup changes, including a temporary expansion with musicians from the Flames. Brian Wilson returned to an active production role in the mid-1970s for albums like 15 Big Ones and The Beach Boys Love You, though internal tensions persisted. Following Dennis Wilson's death in 1983 and Carl Wilson's death in 1998, the surviving members have continued performing and recording, including the 2012 reunion album That's Why God Made the Radio. The Beach Boys remain one of the most commercially successful acts in music history with worldwide sales exceeding 100 million records.
