The band formed in Wilmslow, Cheshire in 2002, starting as teenagers playing together before manager Jamie Oborne founded Dirty Hit records to release them after traditional label interest dried up. A steady stream of EPs through 2012 (Facedown, Sex, Music for Cars, IV) built their following before their 2013 self-titled debut cracked the UK top spot with singles like "Sex", "Chocolate", and "Robbers". That debut established them as something beyond the standard guitar-band template, incorporating electronic production and hip-hop influences that would define their approach.

Their second album, 'i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it' (2016), became their first international breakthrough, hitting number 1 across the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. What followed was an ambitious dual-album campaign conceptualized as Music for Cars but split into 'A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships' (2018) and 'Notes On A Conditional Form' (2020), both reaching UK number 1. The fifth album 'Being Funny In A Foreign Language' arrived in October 2022. Across these releases, the band explores synth-pop, R&B, electropop, new wave, UK garage, 2-step, shoegaze, post-punk, post-rock, and soul elements, maintaining a restless genre approach rather than settling into formula.
