St. Vincent is the stage name of Annie Clark, a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1982. Her precise guitar work and intricate arrangements have made her a distinctive presence in indie and experimental pop since the mid-2000s.

Clark began playing guitar at 12 and studied at Berklee College of Music before dropping out to join The Polyphonic Spree. She later became part of Sufjan Stevens' touring band starting in 2006, bringing her own compositional voice to collaborative settings. Her background in performance and music theory shaped her approach to songwriting and arrangement, evident from her earliest releases like the 2003 EP Ratsliveonnoevilstar and the tour EP Paris Is Burning.
Her debut album Marry Me arrived in July 2007 on Beggars Banquet Records, featuring contributions from drummer Brian Teasley and Mike Garson, David Bowie's longtime pianist. She then moved to 4AD for Actor (2009), which she wrote and produced entirely with John Congleton of The Paper Chase. Strange Mercy followed in September 2011, her first album to reach the Top 20 on the Billboard 200, and was recorded in Seattle at a studio provided by Death Cab For Cutie's Jason McGerr. Her work balances technical proficiency with emotional directness, drawing from art rock, pop, and experimental influences.
