About Social Distortion
Social Distortion formed in Fullerton in 1978, taking their name from a distortion pedal that drummer Casey Royer handed to teenage Mike Ness. The early lineup cycled through members quickly, but when Ness recruited high school friend Dennis Danell on guitar in late 1979, the core stabilized. Their first single Mainliner/Playpen arrived in 1981 on Posh Boy Records, the Orange County label that documented the region's emerging punk community. Radio support from KROQ-FM's Rodney Bingenheimer helped them build local momentum, and in 1982 they toured internationally with Youth Brigade, a journey captured in the punk documentary Another State of Mind.
Ness struggled with addiction in the mid-1980s, forcing a hiatus that lasted roughly two years as he cycled through rehabilitation. When the band reformed, their sound had shifted noticeably toward the blues-soaked, country-tinged approach that would define their commercial peak. The self-titled third album arrived in 1990 on Epic Records and became their breakthrough, yielding hit singles like Ball and Chain and Story of My Life alongside a cover of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire. Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell followed in 1992 as their second gold certification. Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes in 2011 marked their most recent studio album, though the band has continued touring without major new releases since then.
The band's visual identity comes from a skeleton logo designed by Mackie Osborne, wife of Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne, based on a New Year's Eve party invitation. Ness has remained the only constant member across the band's 44-year history while others rotated through the lineup.
