About Simon & Garfunkel
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel first harmonized together in Queens in 1953, cutting a minor single as teenagers called Tom & Jerry in 1957. After their initial 1964 Columbia Records effort, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., stalled commercially, the pair split temporarily. Simon headed to England to pursue solo work while Garfunkel attended Columbia University. A radio remix of their track The Sound of Silence reversed their fortune, hitting number one in 1965 and triggering a full reunion.
The duo's creative run from 1966 through 1970 produced five studio albums that defined their sound: Sounds Of Silence and Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme in 1966, followed by Bookends in 1968 and Bridge Over Troubled Water in 1970. Their music reached millions through Mike Nichols's 1967 film The Graduate, whose soundtrack became a cultural touchstone. This period yielded multiple top-ten singles including Mrs. Robinson, The Boxer, America, and Cecilia, establishing them as writers and arrangers of considerable craft. Constant creative friction pushed them apart in 1970, though they reunited for a legendary 1981 Central Park concert drawing over 500,000 attendees.
Simon & Garfunkel won seven Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. They have sold over 100 million records worldwide.
